Follow these steps to set up the software on your computer.
Run the application after installation. The main window opens and triggers a scan of your USB and SMBus hardware. This process maps every connected device with lighting capabilities.
The device list appears on the left side of the window. If your device appears in the list, you have a successful link. If a device fails to appear, check your USB connection or restart the program as an administrator.
Select a device from the list on the left to edit its lighting. The right side of the window shows color controls and effects.
Most issues stem from locked hardware or other lighting software. Close any other lighting programs before you run OpenRGB. These programs often lock the communication ports needed for control.
Driver permission: Sometimes windows blocks raw device access. Right-click the program icon and select Run as Administrator to grant the required permissions.
Device detection: If the software misses a device, click the Rescan Devices button in the top menu. This forces the program to re-examine the hardware bus.
OpenRGB uses minimal system resources. You can minimize the window to the system tray to save space. The software runs silently in the background while keeping your lighting settings active.
Avoid running multiple programs meant to control lighting at the same time. This creates conflicts between the software and leads to flickering lights or unresponsive hardware.
This software operates offline. It does not send your data to external servers. It only communicates with the hardware plugged into your computer ports. You have full control over your lighting setup in a private environment.
